What you will gain by taking an MA in English Literature
Studying English at the Masters level takes you through the specific issues in contemporary Africa in terms of language use and development in relation to the world as well as specific issues reflected in literature –issues relating to the nature of knowledge and existence in Africa especially, issues relating to the environment, conflict, gender, fundamentalism, tradition, etc. You are expected to study Language or Literature in the context of development. This makes the scholar conscious of the fact that the aims of criticism include advocacy; you also become aware that the aim of interpretation and analysis is to gain clearer understanding which leads to finding solutions.
Texts studied at this level are usually regarded as canvass of human activities rife with so many dynamics. You become the observer of those activities and dynamics. The studies makes you to take note of the behavioural patterns and thought processes of the characters on the canvass, their utterances, narrator’s comments, and so on, which emanate from real human experiences and which give the student insight into human nature, nature of ethnic conflicts, the state of the environment, nature and causes of religious fundamentalism, gender issues in the society, issues regarding obnoxious traditions as well as the general human condition with regard to Africa and Nigeria especially.
